Saudi Arabias 900 Year Old Gingerbread Village Stuns Every Visitor Who Finds It

Saudi Arabia hides a green mountain village that breaks every desert stereotype. Rijal Almaa sits along a ridge in Asir Province. Lush hills surround its stone towers, some reaching eight stories tall. Locals and visitors call it the gingerbread village. One look at its colorful window borders explains why.

A Nine Century Stop Along Ancient Trade Routes

Rijal Almaa dates back more than 900 years. Saudi heritage authorities and UNESCO trace its founding to roughly the 12th century. Some historians believe parts of the village are even older. Long before modern maps existed, traders and pilgrims passed through this ridge. The route connected Yemen and the Levant to Mecca and Medina. That position turned Rijal Almaa into a busy trading hub.

Around 60 multi story buildings still stand along the mountainside. Builders used natural stone, clay, and wood to construct them. Families arranged the towers in a tight defensive cluster. Nearby villages share a similar style, but locals consider this cluster the best preserved. Small windows with painted borders line each brown stone facade.

Fighters Who Refused To Bow To Empire

Rijal Almaa's story includes fierce military resistance. Its fighters helped defeat Ottoman forces sent to control the region in the early 1800s. In 1826, local defenders overcame a large army led by Ahmed Pasha. That victory helped Asir briefly declare independence from Ottoman rule. A decade later, residents pushed back Ottoman troops under Ibrahim Pasha as well.

A Village Earning Global Recognition

Rijal Almaa keeps collecting honors for its preservation work. The village won the Prince Sultan bin Salman Award for Urban Heritage in 2007. Saudi authorities submitted its UNESCO nomination file in January 2018. It has stayed on Saudi Arabia's UNESCO Tentative List since 2015. Full World Heritage status is still pending.

In December 2021, UNWTO named Rijal Almaa one of the world's Best Tourism Villages. Judges selected it from 175 candidates across 75 countries. The announcement came during a ceremony at UNWTO's General Assembly in Madrid.

Local residents opened a heritage museum in 1985 inside Al Elwan Fort. This fort remains the largest structure in the village. The museum now holds more than 2,000 artifacts across nineteen sections. Manuscripts, tools, and everyday items tell the story of life along the trade route.

Planning A Visit

Most travelers reach Rijal Almaa by renting a car from Abha International Airport. The drive takes about an hour through winding mountain roads. Wild monkeys often appear along the roadside during the trip. Many visitors stay until sunset, when lights illuminate the stone towers against the dark hills.

The village's exterior architecture remains mostly intact today. Heritage officials still push for deeper restoration of the interiors. Saudi tourism authorities continue working with private partners on this rehabilitation. Their goal is to protect Rijal Almaa for future generations of travelers.
